ACHINOAM NINI, better known as jazz singer songwriter NOA, was born in 1969 in TEL AVIV.
She is one of ISRAEL’s most popular contemporary artists.
Her career took off, when she met guitarist GIL DOR, early nineties.
NOA’s music?
It’s nothing less than a unique sound.
Think JONI MITCHELL, PAUL SIMON and LEONARD COHEN, mixed with old traditional HEBREW and YEMENITE songs, wrapped up in JAZZ and ROCK.
After releasing already 4 Israeli albums and 4 international albums, she now unleashes the ultimate ISRAELI BOMB onto the world (musically speaking): ‘GENES AND JEANS’ !
It has become her most personal album up till now, bringing together all of her remarkable life’s experiences.
‘GENES AND JEANS’ is what one could call a musical journey into NOA’s roots.
Of course her roots lie in her YEMENITE heritage and in her ISRAELI upbringing, but also her internal conflict as a young girl of mixed origins growing up in NEW YORK, her decision to move to ISRAEL, her embrace – through her music – of all these three cultures that live within her, and last but certainly not least: in her quest for peace, musically, spiritually, personally and globally.
Why this title?
NOA is very much attached to her family heritage, her ‘GENES’, but on the other hand she lives, full of confidence, in today’s world, wearing her ‘JEANS’.
Although she is nearly forty, NOA is still a girl, a dreamer. But she is a modern girl, and she is a wife and a mother, and a genuine artist.
All that is NOA. One of a kind.
A gifted songwriter
It has been said before: emotional clashes produce good art.
This is truly the case with NOA.
By listening to singers like Aharon Amram, Zion Golan, Shoshana Damari, Shlomo Dachyani, Miriam Tzafri, Avner Gadasi and Ofra Chaza, she meditated on the old HEBREW-YEMENITE lyrics, full of love and longing, of unfulfilled dreams, of heat, dust, wind and pain. Then she wrote new English lyrics and music, and wrapped them around the old songs like a warm winter coat.
With her lyrics she painted her family’s history, their difficult journey from YEMEN to ISRAEL, her grandfather’s travels to Africa, finally uprooting the family to the US, and also her own decision to follow her heart and return to ZION, and from there, to embrace the world again through her music. It has become a never-ending search for identity, for clarity and acceptance.
NOA live
Live NOA sings, dances and plays percussion, constantly communicating with the audience in her personal way. Her live performances are classy, artistic, top level musicianship, state of the art special effects, and of course NOA’s unique presence in the center of all this.
